Post Office Savings Bank -
Carter Lane
GPO South ...more than 100 years of history. |
|
As
the Savings Bank business continued to grow, the Queen
Victoria site expanded onto Addle Hill,
circa 1890, and along Carter Lane.
The Carter Lane building is on the right of the photo. The
Bell Yard extension can be seen to the left of the portico
(entrance). [Portico: viz, a roof supported by columns at
regular intervals, typically attached as a porch to a
building.]

Addle Hill Annex
The
Addle Hill annex to the Post Office Savings Bank extended from
Knightrider Street, up Addle Hill to encompass the whole block to Carter
Lane. The Carter Lane entrance was formed of an ornate 'Victoria's
Reign' portico, which was incorporated into the Bell Yard extension.

If you compare this photo from 1890 with the
21st century view (at the head of this page) the building is
virtually unchanged.
