Overview

Mail Rail trains running on the Post Office's own underground railway once carried thousands of letters, parcels and urgent datapost (packets) between key sorting offices and selected mainline overground stations across London. Royal Mail's evolving postal operations relocated to larger sorting offices and Mail Rail was mothballed by 2003.

With funding from sponsors, support from Royal Mail, and Heritage Lottery funds, Mail Rail re-opened as a visitor experience, attraction and train ride on 28th July 2017.

As a 'Sponsor a Sleeper' participant, the author was fortunate to attend one of the pre-opening events on 10th July 2017.
