The Telephone Accounts Groups (TAG) were responsible for accurate billing of DMUs (Dialled Metered Units) and itemised calls (dialled direct) as well as those connected via an operator.

TAG

TAG - Telephone Account Groups with territorial duty working were first trialled in Canterbury in 1954 as part of the streamlining of work in preparation for Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD).

TAG groups billed by category, Cat I, Cat 2 and Cat 3 billing cycles, to enable a steady flow of work, cash receipts and queries!

In the early 1980s territorial working was gradually superseded by functional working as Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) telephone systems allowed more flexibility in (Area Office) call handling and team organisation.
