Mondial
House: Miscellanea
|
|
Mondial ISC, switching calls for Europe,
used to occupy part of the 3rd and the entire 4th floor of
the building.
In the late 1990s, BT Openworld moved into the vacated
floors and this was a typical office layout before the
refurbishment was undertaken.

Mondial Miscellanea | Empty Floors |
BT Openworld | |
Overview
With most of the TXK2 switches removed, the
empty floors of Mondial were throwbacks to the 1970s;
vast spaces with no place in the current decade (1990).

The Canteen
|
The Staff Restaurant (as it was then
called) on the 7th floor, catered for all of the engineers
and operating staff. Seen here at the opening are (L to R)
Ron Calfe, Peter Clarke, Fern Mason and Pat Hastings.

Empty Floors

With the light shining in from the
Thames, the vast scale of the floor can be realised. Marks
on the floor are the only evidence to show where the
switching arrays once stood. The cooling plant ductwork is
clearly visible at ceiling level. And the brightly coloured
pillars harken back to the mid 1980s.

Bold colours of orange and yellow date
the bulky pillars with open covers revealing the services
running between the floors. Again you can appreciate the
scale of the building.

The old power supply units were
one of the last items to be removed...

In the late 1990s, BT Openworld moved into the vacated
floors...
A diamond drill was used to cut a hole through to link the
3rd and 4th floors with a connecting staircase.
