Although new racks were generally provided in light straw paint colours, some telephone exchanges retained their battleship grey paint and continued working with pre - 2000 type selectors well into the Seventies. Here we find the very drab conditions in Whitehall ATE...

John Evans explains "The pictures reflect the rather Dickensian working conditions in the old exchange, due to the small front windows and the back windows being dirty!"
