ERNIE 3 ERNIE 3 produced winning bond numbers from 1988 to 2004. It is assumed that the computer tape cabinets are for storing and checking the generated numbers against valid bonds. Notice the 'handwritten' name of Ernie in upper and lower case letters, a departure from the all block caps of the acronymn, as the computer is by now so well known. Although National Savings was a separate entity, in other parts of the Post Office, the use of more familiar names was a common trend at this time.
