Contractors

With the proliferation of telecom companies and the need to quickly extend networks to meet demand, much new work is contracted-out, to enable labour to be provided efficiently and at minimum cost to the network provider. There have been many different contractors over the years, with some specialist firms, e.g. Plessey, providing the direct labour for new installations. More recently, companies such as Telent have been contracted to supply the resources, sometimes in partnership with others to offer a total package of support services.
Openreach
Contractors have historically worked for BT Group, but as Openreach operates 'the final mile' then the majority of work is consequently executed for them.

"Openreach supplements its own in-house engineering resources with partners who are chosen for their ability to provide high-quality, reliable and responsive infrastructure services."

Carillion
Carillion
"Carillion plc is one of the UK’s leading support services and construction companies, employing around 50,000 people. It has annual revenues of £5bn and operations across Britain and in Europe, Canada, the Middle East, North Africa and Caribbean."
Carillion Telent

"Our contract is for the delivery of nationwide civil engineering support to Openreach, such as the trenching for and installation of ducts, erecting and maintaining telegraph poles, heavy cable recovery, as well as jointing and cabling to supplement Openreach’s own workforce and emergency response to deal with eventualities like road accidents, storm damage and flooding. Carillion telent will rationalise Openreach’s supply chain, from five regional suppliers to Carillion telent as a single national service provider. This large-scale transition of service will be accomplished by mid January 2010."
Telent
Telent
Telent was formed in January 2006 as a spin off from the Marconi Group. Telent’s vans are a commonplace sight at streetworks.
