Mondial House: Uncovered
The Closure Programme
The Closure Programme
A closer view of the truck and cable storage. There were approximately 3700 cages used during recovery. The truck is standing on what was a sloped area which was basically large rectangular slabs mounted on a frame. This being built into place once the generators had been lowered some 30 - 40 ft. The loading for this area was 32 tons max. Immediately below this was where the squash court was placed. Standing in the court and looking up you were able to see the underside of the slabs.

Mondial House - Uncovered

The terms of vacating Mondial were that the building be cleared of telecoms kit, which was a dual task of re-routing live circuits and later dismantling all of the equipment...

Ian Coxall shares his photos and memories of the project.

Storage area for stillages (cages) filled mostly with scrap cable. Above can be seen part of the gantry which is a 30 ton movable hoist, comprising two 15 ton hooks and one 5 ton hook. This being used perhaps once only to lower the diesel generators during construction in the 70s. Also, can be seen a green fork lift truck which I was privileged to have been officially trained to use.
