Bell Yard

In none too distant bygone days, Bell Yard was to be found along Carter Lane.

In the photo, this was the return wall of the portico entrance into Faraday North Block and thence national and international switchrooms.

Placed upon this wall was a plaque recalling the time when the Bell Tavern stood upon this site...

Bell Yard

Bell Yard linked Carter Lane to Knightrider Street, but in bygone years this was a private right of way, save for deliveries and access. Bell Yard is steeped in history as it was named after the Bell Tavern which once stood upon this site.

The Bell Yard extension of the Post Office Savings Bank, with its ornate 'Victoria's Reign' portico adjoined the Carter Lane/Addle Hill building.

The original plaque has been reinstated on the new building, and the position is likely to be closest to the line of the earlier Bell Yard.

New Bell Yard
New Bell Yard - work on the site is virtually complete as the new shops on Carter Lane are ready to be let.

It is deduced from the name that 'New' Bell Yard is on a different alignment to the earlier Bell Yard.
